Pinocchio study kit
Project Name: Pinocchio Study Kit
Project Client: Emily Carr University of Art and Design
Exploration: Educational Toy Design
Year: 2017
Read a book,
think about it,
then destroy it with purpose.
This project challenges me to explore the book of Pinocchio, although the storyline is known for Pinocchio’s nose growing every time he lies, Pinocchio spends most of the film getting himself in and out of trouble, making his chances of becoming a real boy. By the end, Pinocchio learns his lesson and goes on a journey to rescue his father from Monstro the Whale.
I started by writing down 50 words from Pinocchio to identify the core of the theme, then creating 30 paper studies based on the theme. After that, I use the materials of woodblock, yarn, cotton and cloth to complete my 6 materials studies. The development and
transformation of Pinocchio from a puppet to being a real boy is the main core of my materials studies.
As Pinocchio was a wooden puppet and carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto, thus, in the final project, I selected the wood as my major media to use instead of physical destroy the book. The five words I pick from 50 words; Brave, Kind, Be Real, Moral and Honesty, represent the five qualities that kids can learn from Pinocchio, also help them to understand Pinocchio better.
The study kit I designed for children allowed them playing around the wood blocks and developing their creative and exploration thoughts children to study the personality.
